On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American player in Major League Baseball in the modern era. This barrier-breaking moment, paired with his performance, leadership, and the exceptional character traits he demonstrated throughout his career, made him a renowned public figure. Robinson used his platform to effect change both on and off the playing field. What do you think were Robinson’s most important life achievements beyond integrating Major League Baseball? How have they had an impact on you or your community?
Despite the significance of breaking down barriers during the integration of Major League Baseball, this was not Jackie Robinson’s most far-reaching achievement. The fact about Jackie Robinson that touches souls even today is that he persevered with his passion even knowing the entire world was against him; even now he was made to believe his very own identity made success impossible. This is something I relate to.
Ever since I was I could start learning, I knew that I wanted to be a scientist. I swore to myself that I would indulge in the eternal quest to discover more about the universe as every scientist has done before me. That being said, the difficulties in pursuing the many fields I was interested in arose and attempted to discourage me. There were countless times in which I doubted the likelihood of fulfilling my dreams, with the thoughts becoming increasingly more debilitating as the years progressed.
Nonetheless, there has always been an indomitable spirit within me that preaches defeat is not an option. I’m certain that the same voice resided in the head of Jackie Robinson. There must’ve been countless moments in his life in which the average person would’ve turned back and given up. However, when pressing on with your dreams and proving naysayers wrong means enough to a person, they are completely unstoppable. He, and many figures like him empower the youth to not be afraid to step in the fire despite its heat, for diligence and perseverance undoubtedly bends the will of every man and woman.
