College Letter of Recommendation from Mom

Holly Suso

Dear Stanford Admissions Committee,

Isaiah Suso is a blessing and an exemplary example of what a son and a student should be. He has not always excelled in every subject, but Isaiah has always been able to learn from failure and assess what he needs to do to be successful in the future. I have watched him struggle, learn, and grow particularly throughout his high school years. Isaiah had known since he was a small boy that he wanted to be a scientist. I remember when he was eight years old, he asked me which scientist studied all the sciences because he didn’t just want to be a paleontologist, or a biologist, or an astronomer. Most children at his age were fascinated with cartoons and or video games but Isaiah begged me every weekend and free day to go to Barnes and Noble. Over the years, his library has grown to over three hundred books (trust me, I counted them), primarily in science and math.

Isaiah’s passions have not only been in the sciences but loves political science and has taken it upon himself to know as much as he can about WWI through today’s conflicts in Ukraine and Israel. He seeks to understand the underlying causes of conflict, the human toll, and the overall emotional, social, and physical impact of war on society, economy, and policy. In the summer of 2022, Isaiah attended the National Student Leadership Conference for International Diplomacy, and in 2023 he attended Boy’s and Girl’s State to further deepen his knowledge in civics and commune with other students who share his passion for politics.

You would think that science and politics would be enough to fill his time, but Isaiah is also deeply passionate and involved in his Air Force JROTC unit as a Non-Commissioned Officer, president and founding member of the Aerospace club in school, and an active private pilot and flight student who is pursuing a certified flight instructor license, and a published author! Isaiah has been nominated for numerous awards within our community and school including student of the month, regional student poet laureate, Jane Block environmental poet, King of the Winter Formal, National Honor Society, and many awards within AFJROTC.

As a single mother, I am of course proud of my son, but I am also amazed. I have never seen someone work so hard to be successful in school and life. He is adored by all of his friends, family, and teachers. It has not been an easy journey to watch him overcome adversity, learn from his mistakes, and challenge the status quo. Many think that a young, African American man should not have the number of accomplishments my son has at this stage of his life. Any many more who don’t believe that he deserves the same opportunities as others. One thing I know for certain is Isaiah is and will be forced to be reconned with and someone who will change this world for the better.
